Animals have played a significate role in psychological research. I do consider the use of animals for psychological research. If it is beneficial to improving human lives and the conditions that we face. I disagree with animals being used for any abuse on misused for unnecessary purposes. Psychology is concerned with understanding and controlling psychopathology, such as depression, phobias, psychosomatic disorders, learning disabilities, obesity and addiction.

Many of these problems cannot be studied satisfactorily in human patients because of the difficulty determining causal relationship between variables, and which leaves us only with correlations (Eaton, Hutton, Leete, Lieb, Robeson, & Vonk, 2018).

“The Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals (APA Committee on Animal Research and Ethics [CARE], 2012; http://www.apa.org/science/leadership/care/guidelines.aspx) state that psychologists conducting research with animals must be knowledgeable about the normal and species-specific behavior characteristics of their animal subjects and unusual behaviors that could forewarn of health problems” (Fisher, 2017).

Many individuals and animal right groups question the clinical and ethical propriety. According to Plous (1996) a mail survey was sent to 5,000 randomly selected American Psychology Association members. 3,982 responded with the results that a) majority support for animal studies involving observation or confinement, but disapproval of studies involving pain or death; (b) majority support for mandatory pain assessments and the federal protection of rats, mice, pigeons, and reptiles; and (c) majority support for the use of animals in teaching, but opposition to an animal laboratory requirement for the psychology major.

Can you please provide an example? What have been some of the benefits for the field of psychology by the use of animals in research?

Also, have there been any recent surveys of psychologists’ views on research with animals since Plous, 1996? Please consider current research to support your viewpoints (e.g., published within the past 5-7 years).

LETTER FROM JOSEPH McCARTHY TO PRESIDENT HARRY S.  TRUMAN

February 11, 1950

From 1947 until 1954, Joseph Raymond McCarthy, the junior senator from Wisconsin was a one-man force of nature as he waged a relentless campaign against perceived enemies of America, of which the most nefarious were communists.  Cruel, bullying, and jingoistic to an obscene degree, the alcoholic senator dragged people and their reputations through the mud while many timidly ran for cover out of fear of being labeled a communist or “soft on communism.

McCarthy, made his first splash in the headlines when he charged in a Wheeling, West Virginia Speech that the State Department was rife with communist sympathizers.  When President Truman angrily demanded that McCarthy be more specific in his charges, McCarthy responded in a letter that was its usual combination of vagueness, lack of clear answers, and counter-charges of communism.

President Truman:

In the Lincoln Day speech at Wheeling Thursday night I stated that the State Department harbors a nest of Communists and Communist sympathizers who are helping to shape our foreign policy.  I further stated that I have in my possession the names of 57 Communists who are in the State Department at present.  A State Department spokesman promptly denied this, claiming that there is not a single Communist in the Department.  You can convince yourself of the falsity of the State Department claim very easily.  You will recall that you personally appointed a board to screen State Department employees for the purpose of weeding out fellow travelers—men whom the board considered dangerous to the security of this Nation.  Your board did a painstaking job, and named hundreds which had been listed as dangerous to the security of the Nation, because of communistic connections.

While the records are not available to me, I know absolutely of one group of approximately 300 certified to the Secretary for discharge because of communism.  He actually only discharged approximately 80.  I understand that this was done after lengthy consultation with the now-convicted traitor, Alger Hiss.  I would suggest, therefore, Mr.  President, that you simply pick up your phone and ask Mr.  Acheson how many of those whom your board had labeled as dangerous Communists he failed to discharge.  The day the House Un-American Activities Committee exposed Alger Hiss as an important link in an international Communist spy ring you signed an order forbidding the State Department’s giving any information in regard to the disloyalty or the communistic connections of anyone in that Department to the Congress.

Despite this State Department black-out, we have been able to compile a list of 57 Communists in the State Department.  This list is available to you but you can get a much longer list by ordering Secretary Acheson to give you a list of those whom your own board listed as being disloyal and who are still working in the State Department.  I believe the following is the minimum which can be expected of you in this case.

1.  That you demand that Acheson give you and the proper congressional committee the names and a complete report on all of those who were placed in the Department by Alger Hiss, and all of those still working in the State Department who were listed by your board as bad security risks because of their communistic connections.

2.  That you promptly revoke the order in which you provided under no circumstances could a congressional committee obtain any information or help in exposing Communists.

Failure on your part will label the Democratic Party of being the bedfellow of international communism.  Certainly this label is not deserved by the hundreds of thousands of loyal American Democrats throughout the Nation, and by the sizable number of able loyal Democrats in both the Senate and the House.
