Dear Students,

 For Weds, please follow these steps. Write down everything listed below, and bring it with you to class. Bring your cluster, too. You will not need to hand this in; however, if you have it, I can let you know if you are on the right track with your ideas. If you don’t have it, I won’t be able to give you any feedback or suggestions on how to develop your ideas.

Step #1:  Write your thesis statement by answering the question directly.

Sample Thesis Statement

One positive and one negative point:

Mai Thi Kim made the right choice when she decided to send Heidi to the US because of ____________________________________; however, this choice also led to problems due to _______________________________.

Two positive points:

Heidi’s biological mother made the right choice by deciding to send her to the US for adoption because _____________________________ and _____________________________________.

Two negative points:

Mai Thi Kim’s choice to send Heidi to America for adoption was incorrect because ________________________________ and ____________________________________________.

Step #2:  Create a cluster to develop the two main supporting points that you mentioned in the thesis statement.  This will lead to important details, examples and explanation that you will need to support your main ideas.

Step #3:  Write two topic sentences.

Step #4:  Under each topic sentence, write down key points of support—a) abstract explanation  b) concrete examples:

The one thing I’ve learned about marriage is the importance of knowing my husbands communication style. My husband is direct and to the point. I explain things in detail. My husband can also talk a lot given the right subject. The above TEDxQueenstown (Ted Talk) video describes different communication styles and how they can influence our relationships. While watching the video, which communication style did you assign yourself: purple, red, yellow, or blue? Think about your family and friends. Are there any individuals you find yourself in conflict with often? What’s their communication style? Why do you think our communication styles can deteriorate a relationship? How can understanding communication styles help build our relationships? This discussion should be fun to read once everyone submits their response.

This Ted Talk is one that should be watched by everyone. How we communicate with each other truly makes or breaks our relationships. I am a mixture of the red and blue dots because I am very direct and to the point, but I am also emotional and like to process things on an intuitive level. I conflict with my mother almost every day because she is the epitome of a purple dot. She is very loud and talkative all the time and does not take the time to listen to anyone. Our communication styles are completely different and due to me being an emotional person and her being overbearing, it has ruined our relationship. Understanding that our styles are different and trying to accommodate each person’s individuality would make relationships around the world better.

I believe that I am a blue dot. As Amy Scott said, I am more of a hands on person and I like to just get things done. I usually take the information in I may ask a few questions but the job will be done. My dad is more like me. He is a very quiet man but works hard and do what he has to do to get everything done. My mom, sister, and my grandma are red dots. They want to get everything done but they are very controlling wile doing the task. The want it done their way or no way. I don’t really conflict with anyone in my family because, we all are use to one another and how we work.

Consider the arguments being formed on both sides of the Gamergate debate. Both sides claim this is about ethical issues; however, they each have very different ideas about what those issues might be. What are the ethical issues involved with the movement? How do the arguments on each side differ from one another? Does one side have a more logical argument? Why or why not?  What might each side need to do to transcend the vitriolic language, arguments, and threats to come to a compromise? And finally, why is it important for CS/IT students to be aware of Gamergate and the ethical issues involved with the movement?
