In America, for instance, we are taught that happiness can be attained some specific material comforts. One study revealed that nearly three-quarters of college freshmen consider being ‘very well-off financially’ to be a ‘very important’ or ‘essential’ goal” (Bolt, 2004: 124). However, personal experience has taught me that happiness has nothing to do with any of these things.
My experience started one day when a friend of mine finally got tired of hearing me gripe about my many petty (and some important) irritations in life. He was my primary sounding board, so I felt abandoned when he told me he wouldn’t listen anymore until I had written down the 33 happiest moments of my life. I resisted, of course, but finally needed to vent so I sat down and started my list. It took me days of thinking, jotting down a note, thinking some more, scribbling and rearranging before I finally had a list I felt ready to show my friend. I didn’t really notice it at the time, but for the entire period I was working on my list, those problems I was always complaining about seemed to melt away.
This readjustment of my thinking was exactly what my friend explained he’d been going for. He had taken a class in which this exercise had been given and he’d learned that when you spend time focusing on the good things that have happened to you in life, you feel less negative and the outside world looks more positive. You start seeing the possibilities in life instead of the obstacles. I understood because I’d just experienced this, but he was right that I probably wouldn’t have understood if he’d just told me.
When I showed him my list, he helped me go through it and grouped my moments into several categories. These ended up including accomplishments, gifts, helping others, family, trips, nature and miscellaneous. As we talked about my list, I realized that even in those areas that might sound more like a focus on material elements, the focus was clearly more on the experience involved rather than the item itself. Perhaps the most materialistic of these thoughts was my dad’s purchase of my first car, a giant ugly machine that provided me with a safe, smooth ride and the ultimate sound system for my riding experience. I hated the car, but loved the experience and the thoughtfulness of my dad in making sure I was comfortable and safe. Trips may seem to be another category full of materialistic aims, but again, my memories are associated more with the way they made me feel about myself and the pleasure I had in experiencing these trips with someone I loved.
After placing my happy moments into categories, I discovered that most of my happy moments had nothing to do with material comforts and everything to do with spending time with family and helping others. Going through my list, I realized that I was trying to acquire things to make me happy but that took meant I had less time to do the things that actually made me happy. It seemed strange that a process as simple as drawing out a list could have such a tremendous impact on my life, but it changed my entire perspective. Dedicating myself to bringing others comfort has overcome any previous thoughts that I had to acquire wealth before I could discover happiness.

The Green Festival experience Last Saturday was a great day where I got to attend an event dubbed the Green Festivalin New York City with two of my classmates from my American Sign Language (ASL) class. ASL is a language used by the deaf for communication using signs primarily made by hands (Sternberg 54). Before we purchased our tickets for the events we had earlier emailed the ASL representative for the festival so that we could at least be certain of a place in the event’s presentations.
On the material day of the event, we arrived and went to the ASL booth to sign in on the presentation that we would attend. We noticed 4 to 5 other people who were also signing in for different presentations which were also offering ASL interpretation services. We proceeded to the counter where we found a lady doing the registration of the people who had come to attend the various presentations. We made ourselves known to her and also informed her that we had emailed a lady by the name Deanna earlier to inform her about our attendance of a presentation that was also offering ASL interpretation services (Sternberg 12). Amazingly, it so happened that the lady we were talking with was the same lady we had emailed.
Deanne informed us that there was an organic beauty product presentation that was going on in theatre B and she directed us to the place using ASL since the venue of the whole event was fairly large and there were a number of activities going on simultaneously. Initially as she was directing us she was too fast and we had a problem following up but luckily another user of ASL noticed that we were not keeping pace with Deanne and asked her to slow down. It is then that she realized she was a little bit too fast for us and apologized that she forgot we were ASL students. She continued to direct us slowly and we understood what she said.
We afterwards headed to theatre B as we had been directed and found that the presentation had just begun. We noticed 2 interpreters and about 4 to 5 deaf people who attended the same presentation. I found myself learning a lot of vocabularies some of which are, strawberry, beauty products, brown sugar, white vinegar, coconut, melt, plastic, body lotion, sun burn and so on. I also realized interestingly that I understood the translation with ease and that I was able to follow questions that were raised by the deaf people (Sternberg 71). The communication was very clear to me.
Another interesting experience was that my 2 classmates and I decided that we shall not communicate in English but we shall use ASL from the beginning of the event till we left the event. The most amazing thing and that made it a great experience was the fact that we were communicating with ASL in real life and we were able to learn from one another. We could easily explain terms to one another that were relayed using ASL instead of English.

First of all the disequilibrium is brought forth by the fact that the exports outweigh the imports in terms of supply. Therefore, the local currency would be greatly supplied in the foreign market (Bized, 2011, para. 4). This would drive the value of the local currency down and would mean that the imports would be made more expensive and the exports cheaper. This would lead to an automatic increase in demand for the exports which would ultimately result to a balance of payment adjustment. The other main advantage of this type of system is that it frees the internal policy. This means that the balance of payment is usually rectified when there is disequilibrium by a change in the external price of the local currency. This is as opposed to a fixed exchange rate system in which if there is disequilibrium it means that there is the need to cause a general deflationary. This deflationary could result to the general unemployment of the citizenry. The other main advantage of this type of system is that the country would be free from economic crisis but not completely as money is usually unpredictable. This is because when pursuing a fixed rate, there is usually a lot of issues such as devaluing and revaluing of the currency but with the floating system, such changes are usually automatic. The final great advantage that this type of system has is that the currency of the small country would be flexible. This can be summarized by the global OPEC oil shock that occurred in 1973 and led to the major problems to countries that pursued the fixed exchange rate system as they became uncompetitive due to the inflation rates that they faced as opposed to a floating system that had internal flexibility against external shocks.
Disadvantages a floating exchange rate system
Just like any other financial exchange rate system, the floating exchange rate arrangement has some disadvantages. The first one is that there is always uncertainty about the local currency. This is because the global currency always changes day in day out and this would mean that this type of setting would lead to uncertainty in terms of the sellers as they would not be sure of the total amount of money they may receive for a good in a day or the other. In addition to that, this system is also prone to lack of investments as the locals and international investors would be lax due to the fact that they may not know the way the local currency may tend to behave the next day (Bized, 2011, para. 8). This therefore, would lead to the overall fall of the currency and an overall, the fall of the country’s economy. In the real sense, these are the only true threats that this type of system faces.

Powers of federal government under Articles of Confederation to those under Constitution The Articles of Confederation is first constitution of the United States. It was in effect from March 1, 1781, when Maryland ratified it. However, it had crucial flaws as the central government had a minimized effectiveness to levy taxes and regulate commerce. The creation of the Articles was because of the wartime urgency and therefore it lacked the most important component of federal government that meant that it could not enforce legislation. This prompted the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to allow for the creation of new federal laws. The Constitution therefore replaced the Articles of Confederation when New Hampshire ratified it on June 21, 1788 (Spencer 125). The US constitution gave powers to the federal government over issues of the national concern while the state government handled the issues of domestic concern. Regardless of that the Articles are not widely used, it is still a part of the United States constitution and still used from time to time to complement the United States Constitution.
Although the Articles were the perfect constitution drafted, it still has some similarities with the U.S. constitution. First, both of them are federal U.S. documents. The central government is still the one in charge of the value of money and not the states. Both constitutions have defined term limits for the different offices in the government and they can borrow coins and set up a federal post office. The documents have a provision that can allow the government to establish an army and declare war on other countries and does not allow one state to enter into war by itself (Vile 34).
However, as stated earlier, Article of Confederation had its flaws but the constitution came along and ratified the problems. As provided by the Articles, the federal government had very little power to make or enforce laws. Nine out of thirteen states needed in order to pass the laws. Only the states could have the privilege to create and operate courts. However, under the Constitution, the federal government is able to enforce and interpret the laws. Only fifty percent plus one vote and the signature from the president is required to pass laws. The executive branch headed by the president chooses the cabinet that checks on power of judiciary and legislature. The Article of Confederation allowed the federal government to borrow and spend funds, but it had not power to raise or level taxes of any kind (Vile 55). It also had no power to control trade agreements among the states or internationally. Each state entered into its own trade agreements. Under the constitution, the government has the right to collect taxes. Congress is obligated with the task of regulating trade between states and control commerce between the states. When it came to raising an army as provided by the Articles, Congress could not draft troops as it was up to the states to contribute forces. The Constitution allows Congress to raise an army to deal with any military situation.
The U.S. Constitution resulted in giving the central government more power that allowed it to have a strong hold on running the country. It allows for the representation of all states in the government.

I have, over the years, acquired many skills. I graduated from Sandalwood high school in the year 1992. I went on to Florida State Community college. Here I graduated in 1996 with an associate’s degree in Business management. Currently, I am working on getting a bachelor’s degree in business management at Everest University. Composite Role Rating The faculty evaluation process is routinely adopted by universities for evaluating performance and improving the teaching effectiveness of its faculty members. A successful evaluation system commonly involves obtaining valid and reliable inputs from students, peers and department chair. However, according to Arreola (2007), the evaluation process is necessarily subjective but, for consistency of conclusions, it needs to be made objective through the strategy of controlled subjectivity.
The evaluation procedure essentially consists of a numerical rating provided by the sources in several pre-defined areas (roles and components) of teacher performance. Measurement tools viz., rating forms, observational checklists or questionnaires are used to obtain measures (numbers) that are valid and reliable (Arreola, 2007). In the hypothetical Impact Matrix (Appendix A) that I have prepared, I have used typical activities that university teachers engage in namely, Teaching, Scholarly Activity, and Service as the 3 major roles to evaluate faculty performance. Under ‘Teaching’, the role components identified are ‘instructional delivery’, ‘instructional design’, ‘content expertise’ and ‘course management.’ In my impact matrix, students, being the target entity, will be the sole judge for instructional delivery skills. This component is best evaluated through the following list of desirable attributes of faculty teaching performance whereby “the instructor creates an intellectually stimulating environment by : demonstrating interest and enthusiasm in the student learning process. demonstrating effective communication skills: writing, speaking and listening. eliciting responsible student participation. …being available to students outside of class time to discuss course materials. …and returning student work in a timely manner” (Clarke University Faculty Evaluation Manual, 2008, pp 4-5).
These are qualities in a teacher that are especially needed for effective guidance of students in their academic course work. therefore, I have assigned 35% as the source impact. With an arbitrary source rating of 4, the weighted rating works out to 1.4 (as shown in Appendix A). The ratings are based on a 5-point performance scale which is: 1 (Unacceptable). 2 (Satisfactory). 3 (Good). 4 (Very Good). and 5 (Excellent). For the instructional design component, students (source impact weight, 10%). peers (15%). self (10%) all contribute the data. The weighted rating from all these sources adds up to an arbitrary value of 1.25. The content expertise component is evaluated by peers and department head, besides self. Content expertise is “the formally recognized knowledge, skills, and abilities a faculty member possesses in a chosen field by virtue of advanced training, education, or experience” (Clarke University Faculty Evaluation Manual, 2008, p 4) which is judged by peer evaluators and department head on the following criteria: the faculty member “possesses an appropriate degree, ongoing professional experience, and licensure or certifications when applicable. is knowledgeable about recent trends, findings and value issues within his/her discipline and incorporates this information in the teaching-learning experience. and, develops a breadth of knowledge that enriches his/her teaching by making connections to other areas within the field of expertise or in other fields” (Clarke University Faculty Evaluation Manual, 2008, p 4) . The ‘course management’ component of teaching is evaluated by only one source that is, the department head since it includes all the “organizational and administrative tasks involved in maintaining and operating a course” (Clarke University Faculty Evaluation Manual, 2008, p 5)
Under the faculty role of ‘scholarship’, “the development of personal professional skills or standing”, “the development of knowledge (research) or of creative work or of professional practice” and the dissemination of knowledge in the professional community through publishing research papers, monographs, text books etc. (Clarke University Faculty Evaluation Manual, 2008, pp 5-6) are considered suitable for evaluation by self, peers and department head. And, the faculty role, ‘service’ that includes those activities of a faculty member in which (s)he assumes responsibilities relating to the academic and support services of the college besides participating in community service activities are evaluated by only self and department head. According to Elmore (2008), the evaluation system has to be so designed as to “encourage faculty to take all aspects of the faculty workload seriously, decreasing the tendency among those who perform well in highly visible areas to regard mundane aspects of faculty work as beneath them”. I have tried to do just that in the rating system that I have proposed in Appendix A.
In summary, the hypothetical impact matrix presented here represents a format to evaluate the various roles and their components proposed by me earlier as the faculty role model. The evaluations are weighted in direct proportion to the pre-determined emphasis placed on those activities.
