By the end of the story, the character Phoenix Jackson is seen as a fully developed human being despite the short space of time in which she is introduced. Through symbolic imagery and careful organization, Welty is able to present Phoenix Jackson in loving detail as a fully fledged human being rather than simply as a character.

At the opening of the story, the reader joins Phoenix at a point on her path where she is in an evergreen forest. This forest is described as being full of springy needles and bright sun. In this story, the pine trees symbolize the springiness and sunshine of youth. Pine wood is a soft wood which means it’s easier to bend it and shape it to new purposes. This is an example of what Phoenix was like as a young girl. In youth, she was still full of bright hopes and dreams that were often “almost too bright to look at” (142). However, pine wood is also very easy to damage with its softer skin, and Phoenix herself was also vulnerable to these dangers. However, she is no longer so vulnerable as she proves herself capable of defending herself against any rustle she hears in the thicket, “Out of my way, all you foxes, owls, beetles, jack rabbits, coons and wild animals!’ … Under her small black-freckled hand her cane, limber as a buggy whip, would switch at the brush as if to rouse up any hiding things” (143). The upward slope of the pine forest symbolizes Phoenix’s maturing out of childhood as much as it can be seen to be the struggle of the black race out of slavery. While that was a difficult struggle in itself, it wasn’t the last hurdle to be overcome

1. Introduction:

The report is intended to portray my work experience and the improvements that I have accomplished over my performance and skills over the working period of time at Newlook. At this point I would like to provide the reader with an idea about the organization that I had been associated with and job profile that I had worked in. Newlook, being one of the popular fashion companies in the UK has its operations spread worldwide, since it had started its operations in 1969 (Overiew, 2011). The company has its focus on providing its customers with their in-house manufactured products that can offer value to the consumers for the price they pay for them (How We Work, 2011). I was placed in the retail department of the company and was responsible to look after the sales of the company’s products from the retail stores of the company meeting the demands of the customers.

2. Skills Obtained 2.1. Transferable Skills: Basic skills are highly important as these include the basic workplace literacy and the management and performance skills required for any kind of job that an organization may require fulfilling in order to accomplish its objectives. Such skills are developed while working within an organization (Rainbird, Fuller &amp. Munro, 2004, p.102). These are transferable skills that can be used in different organizations and in different work profiles (Cameron, 1999). This is also necessary because people nowadays tend to change their jobs frequently that require him being competent in his work skills to be capable of adapting to the different job profiles. My work experience at Newlook gave me the opportunity to improve my management and interpersonal skills thus developing my personal abilities towards performing on the activities that were given to me as my responsibilities. Not only did I learn the art of looking after the sales of the products, at the same time, I learnt how to manage any unexpected circumstances or confrontations, and how to interact with different members and organize functions for workers who were subordinate to me, thus having an overall learning of management and personal development. 2.2. Communication Skills: Communication skills are one of the most important factors within any organization because it is only through communications that one’s ideas and thoughts can be shared and passed on to others. When a work has to be done by others, it needs to be communicated properly such that the work is implemented correctly. Also relationships are improved if communications between different members are satisfying (Cheema, 2009, p.61). My work experience at Newlook has also enabled me to improve my communication skills to a great extent. In the process of my working, I had the opportunity to observe my seniors performing their activities, interacting with their subordinates as well as the managers. This observation has helped me a lot to unlearn the manners of communicating different views to other organizational members. In my work profile, I had to continuously communicate to the workers as well as report to my seniors.

This new method is the brainchild of Markus Zahn, a professor of electrical engineering at MIT, and the research team led by Shahriar Khushrushahi of MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. MIT had a breakthrough in January, and unveiled its new concept in September this year, posting it as a YouTube video.

This innovation originated in Zahn’s concept that, if oil was magnetic, it could be easily separated from water using magnets. It works on the concept of magnetized fluids, or ferro-fluids. These are synthesized fluids, made up of 10 nanometer magnetic nanoparticles coated with a surfactant to stabilize it within a host liquid. They are typically water or oil based. The mixture of oil and water is collected in a restricted space. The oil is made magnetic by the addition of the magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic oil is then separated from the water, using large magnets, giving clean water and magnetic oil. Using existing technology, the magnetic nanoparticles are removed from the oil, and the oil is recovered and recycled. (Zahn and Khushreshahi, in Hall, 2012). The concept is implemented through an arrangement of cylindrical magnets which are embedded vertically in a large tank. Globules of oil from the magnetic oil and water mixture rise above the water line and are scooped up by large magnets. (Casey, 2012).

The current methods of cleaning oil spills are of five types, each of which is attended by significant shortcomings. The first method just leaves the oil alone, letting it disperse by natural means. The short term assets and liabilities of a company i.e. Current Assets and current liabilities are an important determinant of a company’s operational performance. Positive working capital is imperative for a company to ensure that it sustains its operations. Working capital of a company is the difference between its current assets and its current liabilities (Watson & Head, 2013). Current assets of a company may include cash, inventory, accounts receivables and prepaid expenses while current liabilities include short term borrowings and accounts payable. Thus, working capital is an indicator of assessing the company’s liquidity and higher the working capital of the company, greater the liquidity of the company. A company requires raw materials to produce the goods it wants to sell. When these raw materials of finished goods are produced, these are either converted into finished goods (for a manufacturer) or sold to customers (for retailers). If the sale is made on credit, the company does not receive any cash and an account receivable is created. The sale is complete when this account receivable is converted into cash. Working capital is the requirement of the company to purchase the raw materials until the raw materials are converted into cash. The number of days required to convert raw materials into cash is called a company’s cash cycle and higher the company’s cash cycle, higher is the company’s working capital requirement. A very high trade payables is the major reason for the negative working capital. The current ratio is also an indicator of company’s liquidity and is calculated by dividing current assets with current liabilities. The current ratio of the company increased from 0.67 times in FY12 to 0.69 times in FY13. However, still the current ratio is under 1 which is not a good sign for the company. This shows that the company is facing liquidity issues and this will not bode well for the company’s profitability in the years ahead. Tesco will have to borrow from banks to fund its short term needs and improve its liquidity position. Tesco can improve its working capital by ensuring quick payments to its creditors. Currently, the company’s creditors are on a very high side which indicates that Tesco delays the payments to its supplier. The business model is also such that the inventory is purchased on credit and the sales are made on cash. However, this cash is not reflected on the company’s balance sheets which shows that the company has invested that excess cash elsewhere in noncurrent assets. But Tesco, the retail giant and largest super market chain in the UK, has negative working capital due to nature of its business. Since Tesco is such a large super market chain, it does not need to hold excess inventory. Moreover, the debtors of the company are also low since most of the sales are on cash which explains the low current assets of the company. The company buys its supplies on credit and pays back when the goods are sold which explains very high payables. Due to the nature of retailing business, we can conclude that Tesco’s working capital is not that bad and the company is managing its working capital in an effective way. Hence it is important to understand the dynamics of an industry before assessing its working capital management policies. It is imperative that the company adopt working capital management policies that ensure that the company’s working capital is managed effectively and efficiently. The goal of working capital management is to achieve the optimum level of working capital so that it is neither excessive nor too less as both can be harmful for the company.
