The brilliance of men and modernization has found ways to gracefully do away with old people through sophisticated nursing homes. Nursing homes are well meaning institutions nevertheless devoid of the warm atmosphere of a family life. Thus, the question at hand is what are old people for? Have they become like some kind of an incurable sickness to cope with?

William H. Thomas, M.D. in his book “What are Old People for?” gives insights on aging. He says “It is time to enjoy what aging has to offer us, and actually welcome it into our lives”. Probably those old people who are lucky enough to be welcomed to stay in the family, instead of being sent to a nursing home can actually enjoy growing old better. I knew an old lady in her nineties who was a happy person until she died. Her daughter who was my friend told me how an independent person she was, and probably if given an option, she would have chosen to live alone without a caregiver. But her fragility did not allow that to happen, and so she lived with the loving assistance of her daughter who was always seeing her in a daily basis, and a caregiver who lived with her and took care of her until she died. She suffered from Parkinson’s disease that even though was mild, have made her daily routines difficult to accomplish. It was very frustrating for her to be dependent on someone else for the simplest task of combing her hair in the morning, and going to the toilet when she needed. Over time she learned to accept this fact of aging, and have become appreciative of every help she got. She was considerably lucky and enjoyed every season of her life because the people whom she cared about were there for her until the end. Metamorphosis is the word Dr. William H. Thomas used to describe aging. While young people love the idea of a beast turned into a handsome man or a frog turned into a prince, many people cannot accept the fact that one day a beautiful prince will actually turn into a beast

Proper acquisition of ASL also supports the proficiency in English.

Studies show that bilingualism stimulates language production in both languages. This suggests that a speaker’s brain becomes more open to handling information from two languages (Byrd, 2012, P. 20, L. 13-14). In this sense, a bilingual activates dual grammar systems. This is essential when such a speaker uses two languages simultaneously. Simultaneous, in this perspective, means that a bilingual speaker smoothly transitions from one language to another. When bilinguals develop such control, they can easily communicate to individuals who have only mastered a single language. This is a significant factor in translation.

The technological changes in the mid-19th century were extensive. An additional technological change that had a big impact was the rise of railroads (Boyer, et al, 240). Rail coverage expanded nearly ten times over a twenty year period. Americans of all classes were able to travel freely and comfortably. Perhaps more than anything this helped to open up the West during this period.

Culture was rapidly increasing during this period too, as American writers looked inward to their soul and outward to their growing country. Writers like Dickinson, Thoreau and Emerson published works that began the process of defining what it meant to be American. A definition that would be sorely tested during the Civil War.

The president at the time, Abraham Lincoln was a very principled and serious lawyer who cared a lot about his country. He fought against politicians who were pro-slavery, but he was conflicted about what the solution to this terrible problem. When he became president at first he didn’t believe the solution was to free all the slaves, nor did he think this was the most important issue in the Civil War between North and South. He saw too many shades of grey. But as the war progressed, he began to see that slavery was the main issue and he would have to do something about it. Slavery was an important issue, but one thing that Lincoln didnt understand was how technology was changing things dramatically.
