The presence of earth’s magnetic field can be explained through the dynamo effect. Deep inside the earth’s core is a solid iron ball with temperatures reaching as high as that on the sun. Convection currents within this region generate our planet’s magnetism (Phillip).

Over years, many scientists have proven that the earth’s magnetic field is changing. Eventually, though, the narrator gets rid of the cat by hanging it from a tree. There is a twist to this event with his house burning down except for a section of the wall that has sketched on it the image of a giant cat (Datlow 58).
