What is your philosophy when it comes to nursing? Which aspects of your philosophy do you think reflect the philosophical influences that have shaped the profession and are likely shared by other nurses? Which aspects of your philosophy reflect your personal values, beliefs, experiences, and unique perspective? How is your philosophy demonstrated through your practice?

This Assignment provides an opportunity for you to examine your philosophy of nursing within the context of the information presented this week.

To prepare:

Review the information presented in the Learning Resources with your own philosophy of nursing in mind. Focus on any new insights you gained from the readings and how they influence your philosophy.

Reflect on how philosophy influences scientific approaches or knowledge development in nursing.

Examine how positivism and post-positivism have influenced approaches to nursing science (including research methods) and nursing practice. Conduct additional research as necessary using credible websites and the Walden library.

Write a 6- to 7-page paper that:

Articulates your philosophy of nursing identifying the philosophical influences and summarizing how this week’s readings influenced your views/beliefs.

Explains how nursing’s philosophical foundations influence your nursing practice and provides at least two specific examples.

Answers the question: What is the relationship between philosophy and knowledge development? How is this evidenced in your nursing philosophy or practice?

Outlines how positivism and post-positivism influences approaches to nursing science (including research methods) and nursing practice as well as your own personal philosophy.

VERY IMPORTANT : Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from appropriate Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct.

Systematic Reviews: Searching and Analysis of the Literature

This Assignment expands upon the work you have been conducting for this week’s Discussion.) you will conduct a search for literature on your selected practice problem. A Literature Review Matrix template will be used to identify gaps in the literature.

To prepare:

Consider the practice problem you addressed in this week’s Discussion. (You may select a new issue if necessary, but it is not recommended): Practice problem chosen: Health literacy and self-care activities, self-efficacy, and health related outcome of patients with type 2 Diabetes.

Review the guidelines in the Literature Review Matrix, included in the Learning Resources.

Formulate a research question around your issue as indicated in Part I. Then

complete Part II of the Matrix, identifying the resources you will use, search terms and criteria, and Boolean search strings.

Using the Walden Library, locate 10 articles related to your research question. At least one article must be a systematic review.

All of the articles should be primary sources. NOTE: If appropriate, you may use the four articles you reviewed for this week’s Discussion.

Actual Assignment:

Complete Part I and Part II of the Literature Review Matrix template.

Begin working on Part III.

Review Part III of the Literature Review Matrix and notice which middle range theories were used most frequently in the articles you reviewed.

Consider the appropriate use of the theoretical frameworks in each article.

Review the information on empiricism presented in Chapter 1 of Theoretical Basis for Nursing and Chapter 6 in The Practice of Nursing Research: Appraisal, Synthesis, and Generation of Evidence as you consider your response to Part IV.

Complete Part III of the Literature Review Matrix.

In your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature, note the appropriate use of the theoretical frameworks.

Use of Psychosocial Theories in Nursing

For this Discussion, you will explore how social and behavioral theories apply in a clinical setting by analyzing a case study.

To prepare:

With information from this week’s Learning Resources in mind, reflect on the influence of sociological and behavioral factors on health.

Read the case study of the woman admitted for a mastectomy presented on page 328, #3 of the course text Theoretical Basis for Nursing. Consider which concepts from sociological and/or behavioral theories could be used in nursing practice for addressing the patient’s health care needs. Conduct additional research as necessary using credible websites and the Walden library. Also consider how these theories are used in your own clinical practice.

Write 2 pages on the following:

1) What concepts from the various theories could be used in planning the 65-year-old woman’s care?

2) How might her care be changed if the woman were 25 years old or 45 years old?

3) How have social psychology theories been used in promoting breast cancer awareness? Provide at least one example to support your response.

4) How have social psychology theories been used in your clinical practice area? Provide at least one example to support your response.
