foundation for generating a fuller understanding of how and why the event occurred and
for developing strategies to address the underlying issues. Perhaps more importantly,
such an analysis can be used to proactively identify potential challenges and improve
organizational systems and structures in order to promote positive outcomes.
In the first section of your Course Project, you analyze the systems and structures of a
health care organization with which you are familiar.
To prepare:
Identify a health care organization with which you are familiar; one that you will be
able to sufficiently analyze to complete the full scope of the Course Project. (Refer to
the Course Project Overview as needed.)
Select two or more of the following frameworks:

As you continue your evaluation of a health care organization, it is essential to pay
attention to culture. Organizational culture provides the context in which all interactions
and processes occur and is therefore central to any effort to enact change.
To prepare:
Continue to analyze your selected organization, as indicated in Week 3 (Section 1 of
the Course Project).
Continue to analyze essential elements of organizational culture and evaluate the
influence of culture on the ability to achieve goals within your selected organization.

selected health care organization. Through your Course Project, you will analyze this
issue and propose strategies to improve outcome(s), including the redesign of a related
process.
To prepare:
· Review the six quality improvement aims from the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
· Safe: Avoiding harm to patients from the care that is intended to help them.
· Effective: Providing services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit and refraining from providing services to those not likely to benefit (avoiding underuse and misuse, respectively).

Run a one-way ANOVA using the dataset “N6208 Final Project Data”. The Dataset contains 462 cases from the original PolitDatasetA. Two variables will be used for this analysis: Satisfaction and Houseproblem.
The variable Houseproblem is created using the variable housprob, a summary index of eight variables about current housing problems for the women in this sample—for example, whether or not they had their utilities cut off, had vermin in the household, had unreliable hear, and so forth. The variable housprob is a count of the total number of times the women said “yes” to these eight questions. The variable housprob is recoded into Houseproblem based on number of housing problems. The coding for Houseproblem is: 1=no housing problems, 2=one housing problem, and 3= two or more housing problems.
Satisfaction measures the overall satisfaction with material sell-being. This variable is a summated rating scale variable for women’s responses to their degree of satisfaction with four aspects of their material sell-being—their housing, food, furniture, and clothing for themselves and their children. Each item was coded from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 4 (very satisfied), so the overall score for the four items could range from a low of 4 (4 X 1) to 16 (4 X 4). Higher score indicates greater satisfaction. This scale has an internal consistency Cronbach’s alpha of 0.90. The content validity and construct validity have been established in previous research.
For this analysis, use the variable Houseproblem as the independent (group) variable and variable Satisfaction as the outcome variable. Collecting data is how you can justify if the new change is working “Create a Balanced Scorecard of Robust Measures, Meaningful Targets, and Strategic Initiatives,” 2014). Data collection is mandated by the joint commission to maintain comprehensive stroke certification. The stroke nurse will collect and monitor patients progress during admission and give follow-up calls around up to 90 days after discharge from the hospital. This will allow for leadership to see an improvement in the outcome of stroke patients. After six months the collected data from before stroke nurse and after stroke nurse can be compared. The hospital is expected to have an increase in a stroke patient with the new comprehensive stroke certification. This will create an increase in revenue which will help offset the cost of the stroke nurse program.

Creating a balanced scorecard for the new stroke nurse position is critical. The balanced scorecard will track improvements to the quality of patient outcomes and financial outcomes (Jeffs, Merkley, Richardson, Eli, & McAllister, 2011). With the balanced scorecard allows for leadership to see where and how to grow the new stroke nurse position.
Collecting data is how you can justify if the new change is working “Create a Balanced Scorecard of Robust Measures, Meaningful Targets, and Strategic Initiatives,” 2014). Data collection is mandated by the joint commission to maintain comprehensive stroke certification. The stroke nurse will collect and monitor patients progress during admission and give follow-up calls around up to 90 days after discharge from the hospital. This will allow for leadership to see an improvement in the outcome of stroke patients. After six months the collected data from before stroke nurse and after stroke nurse can be compared. The hospital is expected to have an increase in a stroke patient with the new comprehensive stroke certification. This will create an increase in revenue which will help offset the cost of the stroke nurse program.

When nurse informaticists are tasked with identifying the most appropriate technology to meet a specific need within a health care setting, there are many questions that must be asked.
Consider the following scenario:
Riverdale Hospital has come under recent scrutiny for their medication procedures. Many times, paper medication records are not up to date or have been misplaced. As a result, patients have increasingly received their medications at the wrong times. Though each nurse is performing to the best of his or her ability, the fast pace of the hospital has caused some to ineffectively manage patient records.
The lead nurse informaticist, Nancy, has decided that a bar code scanner could help streamline the documentation process while also improving patient quality and safety. Nancy knows that when selecting a bar coding system she must not only examine the hardware and software of the system but also consider the various human factors that can positively and/or negatively affect the outcomes of the system implementation. As such, Nancy asked three of the most reputable bar code vendors to bring sample systems to Riverdale Hospital.
In evaluating each system, Nancy role plays the process of scanning a patient’s bar code. She rolls the coding cart into the room to begin her mock demonstration. First, Nancy scans her identification card to gain access to the medication screen. To scan the patient’s bar code identifier, Nancy then pulls the medication cart to the patient so that the attached scanner reaches the bar code on the patient’s wristband. When the scan is complete, the computer displays a screen that houses the patient’s personal information. By navigating the screens, Nancy finds that she can use the computer to track medication administration. In addition, Nancy is able to view applicable vitals and medication history. As Nancy continues to examine this system, she reflects on the other hardware and software facets she should be sure to consider. She also thinks about how human factors will affect this and other vendor systems.

· Review the media presentation Selecting New Technologies in this week’s Learning Resources. How did presenter Dr. Patricia Button take the above factors into consideration when selecting an informatics technology for her health care setting?
· When planning and selecting a new informatics system, what steps should informaticists take to ensure the system will address the needs of their health care setting? In addition, how can informatics leaders encourage all nurses to commit to using a new technology?
