Applying Educational Pedagogies

Just as theory underpins nursing practice, so too does theory support and inspire educational practice. Educational theories provide nurse educators with a unique lens for the development and evaluation of learning experiences. As a nurse educator, it is imperative that you become familiar with the theories that will help to drive your curriculum.

In this week’s Discussion, you explore three* pedagogies that are well known in the field of education: andragogy, Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction, and constructivism. Though andragogy and constructivism are essentially theories of learning and Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction is thought to be a model of learning, each is also referred to as pedagogy, or the practice and science of teaching.

*Note: By Day 1 of this week, your Instructor will assign one of these three pedagogies to you for your Discussion: andragogy, Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction, or constructivism. Be sure to match your initial posting to the thread of the pedagogy that your Instructor will assign you. For example, if you are assigned andragogy, then post to the Discussion – Week 1 (andragogy) thread.

To prepare

  • Review Chapter 2, “Theoretical Basis of E-Learning,” and Chapter 3, “Instructional Design for E-Learning in Nurse Education,” of the Bristol and Zerwekh course text. Reflect on the ways nurse educators use pedagogies to guide the development of curricula.
  • Search the Internet to locate a learning experience that adheres to the following guidelines:
    • The learning experience is described in detail through a step-by-step Lesson Plan, lesson summary, or an online video.
    • The learning experience is representative of nursing curriculum (i.e., the lesson teaches a technical skill or concept that could be beneficial to nursing students, staff, or patients).
    • You are able to share the learning experience with colleagues via a Word Document, PDF, hyperlink, or another method.
  • Search the Walden Library as well as other reputable sites to locate one scholarly article related to the use of your assigned pedagogy. Consider how your article and your assigned pedagogy are applicable to the education of nursing students, staff, and/or patients. Conduct further research as needed.
  • Examine your selected learning experience through the lens of your assigned pedagogy.
    • Is this pedagogy implicitly or explicitly used in this lesson?
    • If you were the instructor, how might you integrate (or further include) this pedagogy to enhance the learning experience?

Discussion Topic 1: Creating Online Quizzes

You will be assigned to Discussion Topic Group 1 or 2 to post your initial assignment and will be posting your responses to your colleagues in the other Discussion Group. For example, students assigned to Discussion Topic 1 will be posting their initial assignment in the Discussion Topic Group 1 Forum and post their responses to their colleagues in the Discussion Topic Group 2 Forum.

The testing and assessment process is often a struggle for educators. For many, finding the balance between a seemingly “hard” or “easy” question takes much practice. Furthermore, the development of question formats and stems can be a difficult concept to master. To aid in quiz development, nurse educators can use models such as The 3Cs (illustrated below) to focus more on the content of their questions and less on the actual construction. Nurse educators can also use prompts and templates provided at quiz development websites to assist quiz design. These websites can also help instructors easily administer quizzes in the online environment.

The 3Cs Model of Test Item Writing:

  • Content, concepts, and criterion. Use the content of the lesson as well as overarching concepts and nursing criterion (like NCLEX and other formal assessments) as a blueprint for your questions. In addition, consider the ideas and teachable moments that have occurred in the classroom or during clinical rotations.
  • Clarity and complexity. Be sure that your question stems are clear, straightforward, and use simple language. In addition, write your questions at the application or analysis level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. This will prompt students to move beyond basic comprehension and memorization.
  • Critique. Always go back and examine the questions that you have created. This process should be completed both before and after examinations. As with all teaching strategies, evaluation and revision is imperative to ensure the effectiveness of instruction.

To prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources on developing multiple-choice quiz questions. How might you use the 3Cs and other best practices to craft your own quiz questions?
  • Reflect on a Lesson Plan that you have created in this course. Which lesson might lend itself towards a pre- or post-quiz?
  • Select one Lesson Plan you will use as the focus of your online quiz. Then, craft three quiz questions that are closely linked to the learning objectives and learning need of the lesson.
  • Consider the challenges that you experienced in developing your quiz questions.
  • Browse the available websites that educators can use to create online quizzes. After reviewing the format and capabilities of various sites, select one to upload your three questions.
  • Be sure to copy the web address (URL link) that your colleagues will need to view your quiz.
  • Update your Lesson Plan with your three quiz questions and resave with the word “updated” at the end of the file name.
  • Consider any challenges that you may have experienced in using the platform that you chose and how you dealt with those challenges.

Discussion: Clinical Labs and Instructional Videos

Consider the following scenario:

You have been teaching a clinical lab for a few months. During each session, you have noticed that learners spend more time participating in the introductory part of the lesson and less time involved in problem-based, hands-on activities. After consulting current literature on teaching best-practices, you learn that many instructors require learners to watch introductory videos before participating in clinical labs. These videos ‘set the stage’ for the lesson while also demonstrating the skills in which students will engage during their lab. You know that you will still need to review material at the start of the lab but are excited about the advantages that this video could bring. As such, you begin to search the Internet for a video that will introduce your clinical lab.

To prepare

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources. Reflect on the strategies and methods nurse educators use to elicit critical thinking and problem-based learning in clinical lab environments.
  • Consider a psychomotor or skills-based technique that an individual might learn in a clinical lab. (Note: Clinical labs are not just for nursing students. Nursing staff and patients might also engage in this environment.)
  • With these ideas in mind, search the Internet for a short video demonstration of a clinical lab. (Suggested search key words are clinical nursing skills videos). Once selected, carefully review the video, provide the link to the video, and identify the learning objectives and intended audience of learners. If these are not explicitly stated, use the content of the video to determine the objectives and intended audience.
  • Consider how you might use this video demonstration to better prepare learners for an upcoming clinical lab.
  • Use the Lesson Plan Template document as a guide to critique, create a lab-based lesson that could accompany the video demonstration that you have selected.

The Importance of Alignment and Congruence

When developing a curriculum or program, it is important to remember that the content created is just one piece of the institution or agency. Much like placing a snapshot into a collage, nurse educators must be mindful of the larger picture. They should analyze how this snapshot, this one piece, will fit with those around it. However, it is not uncommon for nurse educators to become so involved with the contents of their curriculum that they inadvertently develop content in isolation. They identify skills, procedures, and processes that are important but can forget to translate these ideas across the span of their curriculum. This can present problems for learners, especially in academic settings where the skills presented in one course generally build on those learned in previous courses.

One way nurse educators can place importance on the larger picture is to align the components of their curriculum with the components of the institution or agency. In fact, using the setting’s mission, vision, and philosophy to create the mission, vision, and philosophy of the curriculum is an effective way to build congruence. There are many strategies nurse educators can use when seeking alignment and congruence. In this Discussion, you explore these strategies and consider how you might align your team’s curriculum to that of your selected setting.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 5, “The Classic Components of the Curriculum: Developing a Curriculum Plan,” in the Keating text to reexamine the meanings behind a setting’s mission, vision, and philosophy.
  • Review this week’s media, Curriculum Components. Consider why nurse educators should be cognizant of their setting’s mission, vision, and philosophy when developing the mission, vision, and philosophy for their curriculum or program.
  • Examine the chapter titles and overviews of Chapters 2, 5, 7, 8 and 9 in the Keating text. Then, select and review the chapters that correspond with the focus of your Course Project.
  • Use this week’s Learning Resources and your own independent research to identify strategies nurse educators can implement to achieve alignment and congruence of curriculum components. Consider how these strategies could help to align the components of your curriculum or program to the components of your team’s selected setting

Internal Factors That Impact the Development and Approval of Curriculum

Internal factors can impact every aspect of the curriculum development process. When developing and seeking approval for staff trainings, academic courses, or entire nursing programs, it is imperative that nurse educators are cognizant of the internal environment of the parent institution or agency. Recognizing internal politics, budgetary and resource allocations, faculty/staff characteristics, and the organizational structure of the setting can help nurse educators better prepare for the development process. In addition, aligning the program to the overarching mission, vision, and philosophy of the institution can help nurse educators undergo a smoother approval process.

In this Discussion, you explore the development and approval processes used in an academic or clinical setting with which you are familiar. You then determine how internal factors may have impacted these processes.

To prepare:

  • Consider how curriculum is developed and approved. How might approval at a large institution differ from that at a small institution? How might approval for an academic institution differ from that of a clinical agency?
  • Select a curriculum (seminar, training, course, or program) offered through a workplace or academic institution with which you are familiar.
  • Review Chapter 3, “Needs Assessment: The External and Internal Frame Factors,” in the Keating text. Examine how internal factors might have impacted the development and approval of this curriculum.

Need My Week 2 Discussion Done By The 01122019

Click here to read the article entitled “Overweight and Obesity Statistics” published by the USDHHS. Analyze the article and answer the following:

  • In a paragraph, summarize the article overall.
  • What two things did you learn from this article?
  • After reading this article, what would you tell someone who eats a poor diet and has some of the risk factors for overweight and obesity? Do you think cultural differences can contribute to what foods are habitually eaten?

Americans are eating “junk” food such as fast food, cookies, and chips in place of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. How, in your opinion, are fast food or junk food items linked to diseases? Can these foods compromise your nutritional status? Is there a way to measure if junk foods may be negatively affecting your health?
