Case Assignment

This is a three-part assignment related to a study of contraceptive drug use among women. Table2A is a distribution of systolic blood pressures cross tabulated by age and pill use for women.

First, state whether blood pressure in Table 2A would be a continuous variable or a discrete variable. Explain. Then supposing that the number of women in each of groups (non-users and users) were identified, would the number of women in each category be a continuous variable or a discrete variable? Explain.

Part 2: Use any free online histogram maker* to draw histograms for the blood pressures of the users and nonusers ages 35–44. Discuss one conclusion that can be made about blood pressure and pill use. *Here are some free resources:

Part 3: Based on what you’ve learned in this module about normal distributions, explain why a normal approximation of data would be helpful to view the data. For example, you could describe the steps that one would take to estimate the percentage of women with blood pressures in an age group.

PROMOTING AND EVALUATING HEALTH BEHAVIORS

Case Assignment

According to Mokdad & Remington (2010), “health behaviors are a leading cause of illness and death in the United States” (p. 1). Reflecting on this statement, write a paper (3 pages) discussing the importance of being able to measure health behaviors and describing methods to assess health behaviors in a target population.

The following items in particular will be assessed:

1. Discuss reasons for measuring health behaviors.
2. Identify at least two methods to assess/measure smoking behaviors among adolescents in your community.
3. In your opinion, do you agree or disagree that measurement of health behavior is useful for program planning. Defend your position by providing empirical evidence.

Public Service Announcement 

Identify a public health concern that contributes to health risks or disease. As a governmental official, prepare a public service announcement (PSA) in the form of a two-page brochure to educate the public on this concern. Remember to address the following:

1. A brief explanation of the concern, including a definition
2. How the concern impacts public health, with current statistics
3. What citizens can do to protect themselves
4. How your agency can address the concern, including measures and surveillance
5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) –  with specific items
6. Whom to contact for additional details (e.g., WHO, Ministry of Health), including an address and phone number.

Your brochure should meet the following structural requirements:

– Two-page brochure that includes all elements detailed above

– Conforms APA writing standards; be sure to cite any statistics or other information, as appropriate.

– Add cited image

– References pages could be included on a separate pages or the back , to not draw away from the brochure.( not older than 5 years back)

– In MS Word there is an option for creating a brochure, you can use images, bulleted, lists etc, to be creative.

This module focuses on inferential statistics. As a reminder, inferential statistics are used to determine the probability that a conclusion based on analysis of data from a sample is true (Norman & Streiner, 2008). The purpose of this discussion is to show the various types of hypotheses, how to identify them in an article and the importance of “significance” and a p-value.

For this discussion, use a peer-reviewed article (focused on a health study) of your choice to:

• Identify the Ho and H1
• Identify and explain what “significance” is in a general sense and in your chosen article. Be sure to discuss the p-value.
