geog 1100 applying research to geographical problems
Introduction:
This assignment is intended to encourage the development of research skills and critical analysis in geography. The assignment has 3 steps, outlined below.
Instructions:
Step 1. Choose 1 of the following topics to explore:
- Geographies of colonialism, postcolonialism and dispossession
- Global geographies of environmental change
- International migration
Step 2: Select 1 article that provides a conceptual basis for exploring your topic. The article must be published from 2014 onward, and come from one of the following peer-reviewed journals:
- Progress in Human Geography
- The Geographical Review
- Geoforum
Step 3: Write a 750-1000 word explanation of how the article you selected provides a conceptual basis for your selected topic. For example, imagine you were writing a research paper on this topic; why did you choose this article? How does it help you understand the issue?
It is recommended to use the following questions as a framework for your paper:
- What is the article about? Provide a brief summary of the article and how it relates to your chosen topic.
- How does this article inform your understanding of the ‘big picture’ around your topic? In other words,does this article help situate the article in historic and global context?
- Does the article provide important background, or theory, to understand your topic?
- Is the article you chose applicable to other contexts or places? Explain.
- What other information would you need to develop a fuller exploration of your topic? What is missing fromthe article you chose?
