I Went Through The Chapter A Couple Of Times And Can T Seem To Grasp The Concept

I went through the chapter a couple of times and can’t seem to grasp the concept of being able to predict the products of some reactions and not being able to predict the products of others. Is there a set of rules to follow when it comes to miscellaneous oxygen-containing compounds?
